CodeLikeagirl 2017 - Event in a box
The Challenge: Young girls do not get enough encouragement to pursue STEM fields. Though the CodeLikeAGirl 2016 event was successful in getting the attendees excited about STEM fields, it is difficult for other organizations to compile a significant curriculum to produce a similar event.
Solving for: Organizations like schools or corporations that are interested in reproducing the success of CodeLikeAGirl 2016 in motivating girls to pursue STEM fields.
Role: Visual designer on a multi-disciplinary team.
As a follow-up to the success of our 2016 event, the CodeLikeAGirl team wanted to make it possible for other organizations to put on this day-long event in hopes that our work could touch the lives of more and more girls. We chose to use a zoo theme for this 'Event in a Box,' so that girls everywhere could have an accessible and friendly theme with which to relate to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.
Though we were able to re-use much of the content from our previous event, we had to re-tool all of the graphics we had been using in the event materials for IP distribution reasons. My task was to create new vector images of zoo animals and environmental objects like rocks and branches to include in the package. The top-right image in the below assortment is the sketch that most of the vectors were based on, done by a co-worker, surrounded by my first round of vectors.
As a team, we took a second round and cleaned the vectors. Below, you can find the final version of my vectors.

Once the vectors had been completed, I took my sights towards CodeLikeAGirl 2017 at GE, which would be Star Wars themed. I created a small mood board for the event (left), and also took inspiration from the original poster of "The Empire Strikes Back" (below).
As the event is geared towards empowering young girls, I felt that it was important to showcase Princess Leia on the poster so that they had a strong female character with whom to connect. I experimented with flat design here because I felt that it looked young and accessible. I took inspiration from the heading and center title on the original advertisement for this new poster, including an additional lightsaber to add excitement.
My colleague Aparna left me the following comment after we worked together on this initiative.
"It has been a great pleasure working with you during the codelikeagirl event and aftermath of publishing the event in a box. We couldn't have done it without your ardent efforts in re-creating the new vectors for the Event in a box. The vectors turned out amazing, even better than the purchased ones from before. You have played a brilliant role in making the event in a box a huge success. Not only are you are a superb listener, but it amazes me, how well you implement the team's vision by creating amazing vectors. The poster for the next event has turned out beautifully. Thank you for being there to support the team with a big smile and pure positive energy. I cannot wait to collaborate with you during the next #codelikeagirl event."
